1st Page4th PageIn-Progress Pictures Explanation and ReflectionI started with getting inspiration from a variety of Disney franchises, characters, movies, and books to create my theme for this altered book project. I decided my theme was going to be Disney characters that are heavily involved in fantasy and magic. My first page consisted of The Little Mermaid, as Ariel sat upon a rock in the water. Her tail went through a "hole" in the book that led to the next page in this sequence. This next page that correlated to the first also pictured Ariel upon a rock in the water, but on this illustration, she was illustrated from a different perspective, and at a later time in the day. The third page in this sequence was directly next to the second; consisting of two Disney Fairies lounging on dirt and sand near tall grass and a stream. In addition to the 2-dimensional fairies that were pasted onto this page, I also inserted a 3-dimensional model of a fairy by repurposing a Disney fairy toy I had. Near the fairies in this illustration, I recreated Cinderella's glass slipper with hot glue, sparkles, paint, and mod podge to make the shoe 3-dimensional. On this page, you can see how the entire shoe is not entirely illustrated; instead, I placed "the rest" of Cinderella's slipper on the fourth page in the sequence, which was placed far beyond the third page for the sake of fitting the 3-dimensional fairy onto the third page. On this 4th page, the other half of Cinderella's shoe was placed in the bottom left corner, and her pink gown, as it is was destroyed in the 1950 animation, is painted next to this slipper. The next page, which lays directly upon the 4th when the book is closed, allowed for illustrating the "transformation" of the show into a sparkling slipper, as this 5th page, layered on top of the 4th, illustrates Cinderella in her blue gown. The final page that has a significant illustration correlating to my overall theme contained a pumpkin that I made partially 3-dimensional with the help of paint, hot glue, mod podge, tissue paper, and fake grass. Although the pumpkin is just illustrated as a simple pumpkin, without doors or wheels, it can still be correlated to the theme as it reminds viewers of Cinderella's carriage after the clock strikes twelve.
Overall, I am pleased with this altered book. The process was quite messy and the variety of mediums doesn't make my illustrations look realistic, but that is a good thing since most of my inspiration came from non-fiction cartoons and Disney stories.

Final ArtworkIn-Progress PhotosExplanation and ReflectionI decided early on in my planning process for this project that I wanted to have an interesting, unusual composition and perspective from which my reference photo would be taken. I used my canon camera in order to make certain things in my photo have a "bokeh" effect, while other objects are crystal clear. I didn't just gather some medals from around my house and call it a day, I wanted to choose only a few, selective objects, and allow the audience to take a closer look at my piece. In the reference photo pictured, you can see two spoons stacked on top of each other; these represent my love for cooking and enjoying food with others. Next, you see my figure skate, with mostly the blade being pictured; this represents my love for the sport and art of figure skating. Lastly, I placed a drawing that I completed for this art class in my "setup", to represent how I enjoy art and work hard at it, as well as all of my other school subjects and extracurriculars. The purse that is partially "blurred", pictured on the left with iridescent rhinestones, is used to create a unique look to the composition of what is clear and what is blurred in my photo. On a deeper level, this purse represents an aspect of my personality in which I enjoy bright, colorful things, and the purse also correlates to a memory of when I used the purse as an accessory for my 8th grade dance, a dance for which I made my own iridescent rhinestone shoes to match this purse to let my creativity shine through my outfit that I wore to such event. If I could do anything differently, I would have given myself more time to enhance the appearance of the "blurred" jewels on the purse. I think that I get the idea across to the point of where it is distinguishable as the purse from my reference photo, but I think I could have perfected the amount of blurriness and the blending of the jewels' colors a little more. All around, I am pleased with the outcome of this piece, and I really enjoy the reference photo that I took and how the composition "reels me in" to further examine the details of the drawing. I think this was a learning process for me to find better methods on how to show the luster of objects, and to draw lines on objects that are needed more clarity of an object, without taking away the realisticness of an object. Head to this blog post to see the sequence of photos that I took on my canon when I was deciding on what I would make my piece about in order to not only reflect images in luster objects, but to literally, reflect aspects of my personality and things that I enjoy.
The images below include both, tests of how my camera responds to different reflective surfaces in compositions that were appealing to me, as well images that are more directly inspired by an idea that I had to represent things that are a part of my life and/or I like. Pictured above, a portion of my most recent assignment in this art class lies beneath my figure skate blade, which a singular sparkle shines on. You can then notice a spoon and some other silverware that are quite unique in color; they are iridescent silverware. Spotted next to the colorful silverware is a purse that I have which is bedazzled in iridescent crystal rhinestones. |
