Final PaintingIn-Progress PhotosReference PhotoReflectionI began this painting by going through my camera roll and deciding what photos I thought would be good contestants with an interesting composition to recreate in the form of a painting. I ended up choosing the reference photo that is seen above, which I severely increased the vibrancy and saturation of. I also added an effect to my reference photo that made the photo look slightly cartoon-like. By altering my reference photo like so, I was able to better-visualize how I would want to paint this image of myself, in a way that is more colorful and captivating.
I gathered all of my oil paint colors, leaving no single color from my collection unused, as this reference photo was now filled with an array of saturated colors. I placed my canvas onto my easel and began to outline the silhouette of my tilted head, my hair, and my shirt's neckline. I then began to add color to the general areas of my canvas in which I thought resembled the same area proportional to my reference photo. For my first few days of painting, I worked heavily with yellow, orange, and red, as these colors were overpowering in my face and hair when I viewed my altered reference photo. I then began to add an array of greens, purples, yellows, and blues in a blurred-like way to recreate the background of my reference photo. At this point in my progress, I could begin to approximate where I would place the hair on my head and my facial features. I began slow and used reds and oranges to outline and express where I wanted each feature. I then concentrated on adding an exorbitant amount of irregular slopes with my paint to illustrate my hair. I continued going back and forth with my hair, the value on my neck, clothing, and face, and my facial features. After days of focusing on such, I buckled down and made some final touches to different areas of the painting, and then concluded that I was done. Overall, I think I did well, as this was my first self-portrait, other than when I illustrated myself as an infant in graphite. I will definitely resume this painting when I have some free time, as I can still see an array of things that I wish to alter the position of in my painting, to make the placement of my features and the overall "movement" of the figure in my painting, more accurate to my reference photo.
